fasten linux with preload

Ram is a big issue, even on linux. The machine can clog due to insufficent ram, not because of viruses like windows. Some people might ask, how do i save ram? A better question would be “How do i utilize my unused ram and make my system faster?”

Preload is an app, which uses your unused ram to cache data, that in turn enhances your system performance. The app runs as a daemon process. You may want to read more on how it works before you proceed to install the app.

run linux apps in windows

i prefer to run windows apps in Microsoft, but most of the time, stupid windows requires some feature or the other, and i am forced to move to windows. Now there is the second alternative. use windows and run linux apps inside windows.

The soltuoin is to use andlinux, a wonderful app. You can seamlessly run kate, konqurer and firefox inside your windows machine.

The download is only 600MB for the KDE version and 150MB for the xfce version.

and linux - andlinux

The windows operating system can also run other linux opertaing systems inside itself, andlinux is one. What a creative name. This linux flavour is based on the best linux i have witnessed so far and hence must be good too. I ll try andlinux later today and write a review later.

This linux can run on all windows 2000 based systems (xp included) and can run most applications that can be run in windows. The operating system demands little memory, 128 MB would suffice. Both x and k versions are available.

windows linux switches

The greatest enemy of the linux is itself and the few silly people, who feel linux is for geeks. There is a nice little story about why a small school in melbourne moved to linux, dumping windows, seven years ago. The reason cited being the free software and the security offered in linux.

However the people have moved back to windows, i really hate this. why should somebody move from linux to windows? The other direction makes sense, ease of operation cannot be considered a plus, in front of security and the cost.

google offers hand to wine

Google and linux have been pals, for a long time. Now the support has just got better with google offering more support for wine. Google will now sponsor the improvements for wine.

The article was today stated in a post in the google open source blog.  The article also adds that the wine environment supports flash 8, though newer releases would require more tweaking. They have also hired a few professionals for research in code weaving, to make patches in photoshop in linux and related environments. Already wine supports photoshop, but more digging is required for future releases.

the xfce desktop environment

If you have been using kde and are looking for an alternative, either opting for more performance or for a change, you can try xfce. Xfce is very light and can be customized totally. I have seen people use xfce with xubuntu and they have praised the speed.

One developer i talked with, also said that the xfce environment is very light weight and the code has a lot of reusable snippets. The current version is xfce 4.4, and it also adheres to standards. Imagine the caption - “and everything goes faster” , hope it works for you.

Download xfce

linux Virtualization - software list

As you already know, Virtualization is a new concept of running an OS in an existing operating system environment. You could have seen this with ubuntu linux cds, which can operate as “live cds”. In fact you can install linux only from Virtualization in ubuntu.

I recently found a lot of software, which can be used for Virtualization of linux. As always the favorite ubuntu is leading the list and the editor has talked a lot about a few closed source software also. I thought linux in all flavors was open sourced.

canonical adds parallels to ubuntu

I love ubuntu because it is open sourced. Even if it is just a bug feature in ubuntu that i can do with the time available, open source stands apart from every thing else. Now there is a small twist in the tale. Canonical has just added parallels software to ubuntu, the code for which will remain closed sourced.

The linux binaries will not allow closed sourced packages in to the environment but there are a few ways to work around and slip it in. This will not cause any stir to ubuntu and will still be open sourced and also will just add to the features of ubuntu.

how easy is ubuntu?

Making a non tech lay man or a woman work on a system and get no complaints is not easy. People working with windows do not need much to learn, but they do not get much to learn with it too. making a ubuntu system easily accesible for a lay man seems rather impractical, partly becuase it is difficult and also because it is not what ubuntu or even linux is meant for.

If you are not a geek and are just getting started with the internet, like parents and the elderly, you did better start off with a windows system or read this one article where the user made ubuntu work for his mom.

kde 4.0.1 released

It is very surprising to see that a newer version of any software coming up immediately after a release. It is not even a month since the release of kde 4.0, but the next version kde 4.0.1 has been released. This version primarily involves bug fixes and performance improvements. It is to be noted that even google had a live report seeking the release of kde 4.0.

Kde is also been developed in other platforms, and it would not be surprising to see a kde for windows and kde for mac soon. The release is expected later this year.
