ubuntu - report bugs

Users using ubuntu do sometimes find a rare mis functioning or a feature missing in the ubuntu operating system. I have seen numerous bugs in the working of windows and the bad thing is that i do not have access to the source code. Unlike windows, ubuntu is more stable and you get lesser number of bugs. Still you have to picture that the code is an open source initiative and hence a few beginners could also have written code and hence there are probabilities of bugs.

In case you visualize bugs, please report the same in the ubuntu bug report feature. This will enhance the operating system and you are doing good to the community. Here is a lost of dos and donts for the ubuntu bug reporting process.

small linux - windows sucks

If you have a old system or a upcoming palm os, linux can stand better than windows. Linux can still run with only mega bytes of memory compared to giga bytes in windows. Here is a nice article about why linux can run with only mega bytes. Learn more about Damn Small Linux. It can run with only 8MB of RAM, compare it with windows which can run only with a minimum of 1000MB.

Damn small linux rocks. No hard disk is required, and it can run fully in RAM. More suited for palm devices, windows mobile will be thrown off.

kde for windows as well as mac os x

KDE is amazing, and it would more fit a mac than windows. But the good news is that engineers are working on the cross platform KDE, and should be out by the end of this year. KDE is open source and i am quite puzzled how it would fit the other two major operating systems.

Early alpha versions are available for those experts who can test the same in windows and mac os x environments. This would be made possible by the use of native widgets. The new release is intended only for testers and the software could potentially damage your windows, as you know it is not stable.

With mac already sporting the aqua interface, KDE would be replicating the work in a different style, but the code would be open source. Here is a new challenge to apple engineers.

microsoft claims linux violates patents

Software giant Microsoft today claimed that the linux operating system was violating patents and was copying and misusing data and operating styles from Windows. I am not sure how this works because linux is open sourced and also maintained by the people of the internet.

The software giant is clearly trying to put linux in to the soil and also trying to take some headline spot with ease. The simple rule to get famous holds good here - get sued or sue somebody..

Why does somebody want to copy poor code and ideas from Microsoft?

hardy heron alpha

Ubuntu 8.04 alpha was released a couple of days back and the version seems to be cool, however it is still in alpha.

This version boasts a lot of new features like the pulse audio, an open source sound server. It also includes pulsekit, an addiotnal security feature in terms of a layman.

This version is only released for testing and you should not download the same, unless you are sure of what you are doing. Aimed at testers and develpoers of ubuntu only.

The beta release has been not been officially announced so far and you have to wait for some more time to get news about the same.

gentoo linux

After my puupy linux experiment, one of my friends called me up and suggested this new linux distribution called gentto. I was very new to it, but i just downloaded the content via torrent. The files come in an array of sizes and i was unsure what was the one which suited my ideally.

As always gentoo is open source and is highly customizable. The least configuration being just 138 MB, it promises performance and speed. It is also suited for developers, although the website is not convincing enough to download. When i visited the ubuntu site, i was forced to love it, and i downloaded the OS immediately. this was not the case here. Live CD is also supported.

Support open source!!

KDE 4.0 - almost ready

Linux is great, KDE adds to the style. While KDE has been the operating system that has served millions across the world including developers at even google, a newer version just promises more.

Ten days back, the new version of KDE, KDE 4.0 was released. Early birds who have tried KDE, report that it is very cool, and a bit rough. They also commented that the KDE 4.o was working fine and did most pof their jobs, while it is still rough.

What is more joy is that KDE is also developing a new office suite, similar to Microsoft office and Openoffice. If you had guessed it right , the suite is called koffice. It is under construction and it is calling for develepors world wide.

You can download KDE (latest stable release must be identified)
